THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Two Elon students participated in the Miss Thomasville/Central Carolina scholarship program Saturday evening. Both Katherine Southard and Merrill Ward placed in the top three for their divisions.

Southard, who graduated from Elon in May 2008, won the congeniality award, as well as the slot for first runner-up in the Miss Central Carolina pageant. She received a plaque for the congeniality award, a plaque for being first runner-up, and a $300 scholarship.

The Miss Central Carolina pageant is open to all women in North Carolina between the ages of 17 and 24.

Ward, a sophomore, received a first runner-up plaque for the Miss Thomasville pageant. She also won the award for having the highest score in the talent competition. She received a plaque from both honors, as well as a $300 scholarship.

Ward sang “The Wizard and I,” from the musical Wicked, as her talent. She is a member of Sweet Signatures at Elon.

The Miss Thomasville pageant is open to women in Alamance, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Montgomery and Randolph counties.

Contestants are required to compete in five phases of competition for both the Miss Thomasville and Miss Central Carolina pageants: private interview (25 percent of a contestant’s total score), on-stage question (5 percent), lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit (15 percent), evening wear (20 percent), and talent (35 percent).

Sarah Portela, an Elon resident, won the Miss Thomasville title, and Jennifer Jones, of Charlotte, won the Miss Central Carolina title. Portela and Jones will go on to compete in the Miss North Carolina pageant later in the year.

The pageants took place at Thomas A. Finch Auditorium in Thomasville, NC.
