GREENSBORO, N.C. – Military brides-to-be traveled to Cardinal Bridal and Formal Wear Saturday to get their free bridal gowns. In honor of Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11, the Cardinal store was offering free gowns to active duty brides or brides whose fiance is serving overseas.

Cardinal planned on giving away 100 free gowns, each with a retail price ranging from $800-$1,300. The brides-to-be had to show identification, as well as deployment papers or other qualifying documents.

Burlington resident Michelle Walter patiently waited outside the Cardinal store for nearly an hour before being able to go inside and find her perfect wedding dress. According to Walter, the Cardinal store invited customers to shop inside for 30-minute intervals before allowing anyone else inside.

Walter’s fiance is currently serving in Iraq. She said the two of them got engaged less than a month ago. Walter’s fiance, Brandon Hart, will return from Iraq in July. Walter has been handling the marriage arrangements during Hart’s absence.

Some military brides-to-be traveled to Cardinal from as far as Fort Jackson and Fort Bragg. Leticia Ortiz and Greg Williams, both active-duty members of the US Army, traveled to Greensboro from Fort Bragg.

“The FRG, Family Readiness Group, leader e-mailed all of the commanders and the first sergeant, and they forwarded it [the Cardinal promotion] down to all the troops,” Ortiz said. “I was at work when I got the email. I just mentioned it to him [Williams]. I was more nonchalant about it. He was like, ‘Do it!'”

Williams is set to deploy in September 2009. The couple plans on marrying during President’s Weekend, in February.

Ortiz said she was looking for a dress that tied at the top and ruffled down toward the bottom. After waiting patiently for a little over an hour, Ortiz finally had the opportunity to choose her dress.
