“In the famous song, La Cookarocha, what animal is the singer referring to?” asked Jeff Stein, assistant dean of students. The answer is a cockroach.

As a Homecoming tradition, students from campus organizations sign up to participate in Quiz Bowl. The teams compete in a round robin schedule of trivia against other organizations to see who knows the most about Elon and about the Homecoming theme.

Fifteen Quiz Bowl teams gathered in The Zone Monday evening to battle their knowledge. Some of the most difficult questions were about Hispanic culture. These questions came about as a result of the Homecoming theme, which is Phoenix Phiesta.

Participants learned that Christopher Columbus named the country Costa Rica and that Belize used to be called British Honduras. When asked what the town of Elon used to be called in the 1880s, Sigma Kappa’s adviser shocked the crowd with her correct response: Mill Point. Mill Point was the name of a railway station in the area.

The events leading up to the Homecoming game generally involve competition among various groups and organizations on campus. According to junior Maria Wyka, SGA executive secretary, the top five teams in the competition were awarded points. These teams were Alpha Omicron Pi, RSA, Danieley Center, Phi Mu, and Alpha Chi Omega.
